If John McCain doesn’t make it to the Oval Office there will be few in the Republican Party or elsewhere who will blame John McCain. Rather, it will be Sarah Palin, everybody’s Fall Girl, who will be held accountable.

The women who raised McCain from the dead after Obama clinched the Democratic Party’s nomination with one of the greatest ever acceptance speeches of a vice presidential candidate is already being set up to be the fall girl by those interested in protecting the legacy of John McCain.

According to the Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder, a faction of the McCain campaign has let it be known that “Palin, perhaps unwittingly subconsciously or otherwise, has begun to play Sen. McCain off of the base, consistently and deliberately departed from the campaign's message of the day in ways that damage McCain. ("palling around with terrorists" was a line that escaped HQ's vetting... Palin's criticism of the campaign for pulling out of Michigan was greeted by anger internally... Palin's expressed opinion that Rev. Wright is a legitimate issue -- which subtly knocks McCain for not raising it -- was perceived as an attempt to preemptively blame McCain's wobbliness for his loss, which would theoretically enhance Palin's standing with the base.)  The complaints extend all the way back to Palin's vice presidential vetting.

Never mind that following the eight disastrous years of George W. Bush McCain wasn’t likely to win the presidency, and never mind that McCain has run one of the worst presidential campaigns in modern history, or that it should be the top of the ticket candidate who takes the blame when things don’t go according to plan; rest assured, it will be Sarah Palin who will take the body blow for McCain’s loss should Barack Obama win the presidency.

Sarah Palin is expendable. She is also an easy target, a women who seemingly came from nowhere with a clean slate upon which the opposition could write her epitaph. The disposable Sarah Palin has now become everyone’s favorite punching bag.

Dare I say it? Yes, I will. I FEEL SORRY FOR SARAH PALIN! I believe that even more than Hillary Clinton, Sarah Palin has gotten a bum rap. That is not to say that she doesn’t deserve some of the criticism that has come her way. But honestly, at this point in the campaign EVERYTHING she does is criticized – EVERYTHING!

Palin is called stupid and dumb even though she beat fellow Republican Ted Stevens the Grandfather of the Alaskan Republican Party for the governorship. She’s called “White Trash” because her nineteen year old unmarried daughter is pregnant (Palin is hardly the only mother to have to deal with teen pregnancy). She’s called a Fascist because of her Pro-Life beliefs. I’ve actually had otherwise intelligent women say to me: “How dare Sarah Palin seek the vice-presidency when she has five children to raise?”

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?!

It’s Sarah bashing non-stop all day everyday. I keep waiting to hear something good about her from someone other than the pundits on Fox News. I won’t hold my breath waiting.

While it’s true that Palin is woefully unprepared in the area of foreign policy to find herself suddenly standing possibly one step away from the Oval Office, she’s no less schooled in foreign affairs than Barack Obama who is very likely to be the next President of the United States.

Even so, where once even Obama’s running mate Joe Biden said the same thing about Obama and repeated his opinion at a recent fundraiser, Obama is no longer assailed for his sorry lack of foreign policy credentials because Barack Obama has effectively deflected assaults on his flimsy resume with the choice of the seasoned Joe Biden as his running mate. And, of course, with the help of the MSM and their turning Sarah Palin into America’s number one punching bag.

From the attack on her $150,000 wardrobe, which will be auctioned off for charity after the election, to “newsmen” such as NBC News Political Director, Chuck Todd and NBC Nightly News anchor, Brian Williams commenting on a joint interview with John McCain and Sarah Palin, last week going on MSNBC and fomenting the narrative that the Republican ticket as lacking cohesion, chemistry, and (he hinted) trust, it appears that however the MSM can whack Sarah Palin they will.

"There was tenseness," Todd told MSNBC's Chris Matthews. "I couldn't see chemistry between John McCain and Sarah Palin. I felt as if we grabbed two people and said 'here, sit next to each other, we are going to conduct an interview.' They are not comfortable with each other yet."

Anyone who watched the interview with an open and fair mind would have thought Todd had watched a different interview. McCain and Palin had a wonderful rapport, and seemed to have amassed a great deal of respect for each other.

But poor Sarah Palin has become the gal the left loves to hate, the left-leaning news media, too. In the waning days of the 2008 campaign Sarah Palin has apparently become the excuse, OK, the scapegoat, for the failed McCain Campaign and the no longer relevant Republican juggernaut.

But all of this pales to the unbelievable truth that it is women who have most ardently leant a helping hand to the political destruction of Sarah Palin. Women who I know fought for a women’s right to have it all forty years ago, today condemn Palin for daring to run for vice-president when saying that she “should be at home taking care of her children.”

By the same token the media has disparaged Palin for spending $150,000 on clothes (actually it was the RNC). And the same women who shop till they drop spending fortunes on clothing themselves, suddenly decry a woman on the campaign trail trying to look her best.

The Wall Street Journal’s Peggy Noonan calls Palin a lightweight. Washington Post columnist Kathleen Parker who is now attempting to build her previously lackluster writing career on Palin’s back says McCain picked Palin because she’s attractive, a blatantly sexist statement from an apparently sexist woman.

Only Hillary Clinton, having herself been eviscerated during her bid for the Democratic Parties' nomination refused to jump on the Sarah Palin bashing bandwagon. Following the vice-presidential debate Hillary infuriated many when she said: “It is amazing, you know, she’s been thrust in the spotlight with very little national preparation and I think, all things considered, you saw a very composed and effective debater,” Clinton said.

For Palin’s sake, all of these personal attacks are against the women who as the first woman Governor of Alaska has a substantive record and an 80 percent approval rating among her constituents, the highest approval rating of any other governor in the country.

You don’t have to agree with Palin’s viewpoint, that’s ideology. But why would women, particularly since most of the women have never met Sarah Palin, attack her in such personal ways? Why are so many women loathe to support other women in their ascent to power?

Sarah Palin is neither incompetent, stupid nor is she corrupt. Her governorship has been a rousing success. What she has become in the narrative of this campaign is what women have become for men for time immemorial: just another female taking the rap for the guy, with a lot of help from her public enemy number one, other women.
