RED, WHITE 'N TRUE

Jesse Jackson didn’t do it. Colin Powell was too much a coward to do it. Shirley Chisolm, Alan Keyes, Al Sharpton weren’t smart enough to do it. But ya gotta give Barack Obama a nod for having done it…Barack Obama has turned being an African-American into a vote-getting monolithic machine able to amass large amounts of moulah and win the white vote on the way to the presidency.

The murky color of his skin once considered his greatest deficit now appears to be a major reason Barack Obama looks to be on his way to the White House.

Barack Obama has turned his race into a Starbucks café latte, Gucci luggage, a Prada original. Barack Obama has become the Minola Blanack of the liberal generation, a brand that everyone has to have less they not be “in.”

Even among Republicans there are those who can’t resist buying into Obama less they not be able to say at the end of this campaign they were “in,” too. They are the defectors who didn’t want to go down in the history books as not being a part of the contrived brilliance of the greatest public relations feat ever!

All of this begs the question: If Barack Obama weren’t “African-American” would he even be within striking distance of the presidency?

I doubt it.

Part of the Obama PR campaign has been to not only make Barack Obama the current must-have commodity, the trendy new diet chocolate bar so to speak, but the more important part of the campaign has been to play on all that white guilt still so much a part of Americana.

Slavery now seems to have enslaved the many and meanwhile Obama has become the first affirmative action candidate for the American presidency. Pat yourselves on the back; you’re about to do a good thing, America.

What should have been a contest for the president of the free world, a contest of the high and the mighty, has turned into the low and tacky, a sleazy late-night infomercial, a re-branding of the American presidency. This year’s designer president: no old white guy, John McCain. This year’s must-have, an African-American named Barack Obama.

Cast your vote for Barack Obama, the first African-American to become the president of the United States, and you can feel great about yourself, free yourself of any guilt you might have had for what your ancestors, and maybe even you, have thought about African-Americans.

Of course, Obama doesn’t want you to think he’s typically African-American; that might be too large a stretch for most Americans. And it’s doubtful the Democratic Party or any party would have run Barack Obama despite all his charm and charisma if he was born looking like Martin Luther King, Jr. or spoke with the cadence sometimes referred to as ebonics, the cadence typical of many African-American’s speech.

Would it be fair to say that most Americans are embracing Obama’s blackness, but voting for the white side of Barack Obama, the side that looks more familiar to more white voters and surely sounds much more typical of the Anglo-dialect of most white Americans?

This is not a racist question, but a question of culture. Don’t most Americans vote for the familiar? If you grew up in house where your parents taught you that abortion is a personal choice, you tend to arrive at the same conclusion as an adult.

Most white Americans accept “cultured” African-Americans, but would cross the street if they found themselves in a dark alley with a group of typical inner-city blacks. Obama himself said that his own white grandmother felt that way.

On the other hand, would Barack Obama have had an easier run for the presidency had his name been George Washington, that white guy who happened to have been the Father of our Country?

There is no doubt that Barack Obama is a smart man, and if nothing else has proved himself an able politician. A white man with his inexperience, however, would never have a shot at the white house, or a white woman. Just ask Sarah Palin now the bane of John McCain’s candidacy, if that isn’t true.

It was both the smart man and the able politician who along with the guru of getting Black men elected to high political office David Axelrod (think Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick) who built the Obama brand, a brand more white than black.

Together Axelrod and Obama have done a grand job of deflecting criticism or any incoming fire that might prove dangerous to Obama’s candidacy by repelling all flak by playing the race card. Hey, turnabouts fair play, ain’t it?

But the truth is Barack Obama isn’t black and he isn’t white. He is a bi-racial man borne of the union of a white American mother and a black African father. He is called an African-American, which in his case would mean the black part of him is African and the white part of him is white. Question: Are only whites American? Just thought I’d ask.

Obama will very likely become the President of the United States. David Axelrod’s job will have been successful. It will be time for him to find a new candidate.

Let’s see…who could he pick? I know someone and he’s currently out of a job. He surely is charismatic like his good friend Barack Obama. After November 4th, he will likely have friends in high places. How about Reverend Wright? This is, after all the season, when black really is Wright.
