You have to
admire a guy who can lose 112 pounds in a short period of time, but you
don’t have to like his Hee Haw politics.
Michael Dale “Mike” Huckabee, who
bears an uncanny resemblance to Gomer Pyle, and talks like him, too - shazam - astonished the
politicos recently when his grassroots
campaign caught the attention of evangelical
Christians and he vaulted to the
top of the Republican dung-heap of candidates.
I don't understand why everyone
is so surprised by the former two-time Governor of Arkansas’
surge in
the polls. Huckabee, in his former fat self, looked like the Republican he
honestly is: more Boss Hogs than Gomer Pyle style.
But he never showed his true self and with his "aw-shucks" dimpled
grin he has for years fooled the voters. Even Time Magazine once
called Hee Haw Huckabee one of the five best governors in America.
The wrong man from Hope,
the former Southern Baptist preacher graduated magna cum laude from some
Baptist University I can neither say nor spell, went on to seminary,
became a staffer for a televangelist and preached the word as pastor of
many Southern Baptist Churches, the best UN-proving ground in America if
one aspires to ascend to the presidency of the United States.
But that does make Huckabee the
perfect candidate for the right-wrong-Christian conservatives - the base
of the Republican Christian Conservative Party -, who are all religious
talk and un-American action. These days the Republican Party seems more
focused on electing a Preacher-in-Chief, rather than a Commander-in-Chief.
Huckabee is one helluva Christian. He says things like: Let’s
isolate AIDS patients; homosexuality is “abhorrent” and “sinful;"
AIDS
Research is receiving an unfair amount of federal money; suggests
celebrities should pay for AIDS research. He also advocates quarantining
AIDS patients and when pressed on his statements, categorically refuses to
renounce his words.
Like his fellow Christian Conservative colleague, George “Tush” Bush, who
having governed that vast foreign land called Texas where he acquired all
his great foreign policy experience that got us into Iraq,
Governor
Huckabee of Arkansas is well-schooled for the job of president of the free
world.
By the way, he proved just how educated he is on the subject of foreign
policy the other day astounding the news media when he was asked to
comment on the intelligence report on Iran that had been dominating the
news for two days. He greeted the journalists, Howdy! then stared at them
blankly, having no idea what they were talking about.
Also dogging Huckabee like that sleepy-eyed basset hound named Flash, is
the Wayne Dumond case, the story of the then Governor’s decision to
commute the sentence of the convicted rapist, more to settle a political
score with his enemy former Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton
then to right a
penal-is wrong. Following his release, Dumond went on to rape and murder
two more victims.
Hee Haw Huckabee’s record as
Governor of Arkansas is a southern succotash of political policy. In 2006,
The Cato Institute, a libertarian non-profit public policy research
foundation, gave Huckabee an "F" for spending and tax policy.
Suffice it to say that when he
left the State's House, the state’s general obligation debt had increased
to almost one billion dollars.
With credentials like these maybe
Huckabee ought to think about getting out of politics and starting a new
business. Wait, I have an idea! He can open up a new weight-loss center
and call it Huckleberry Slim's and become the Diet Guru in Chief. Hm … not
a bad idea. Maybe Oprah can help him with the marketing
plan.
