Let’s call
a spade a spade. Oprah Winfrey is an African-American woman. There, I’ve
said it. Shocker. The pundits have been break-dancing around this truth
and what it means to her celebrity endorsement of African-American-Indonesian candidate
Barack Obama with the same finesse Marie Osmond
almost danced her way to the
top of Dancing With the Stars.

I-OWA DON'T GET IT

There’s
a lot wrong with the way
America
elects its presidents, but let’s begin with the
Iowa Carcasses. How’d a state that has more pork than
people (there’s a political joke here, but for the moment I’ll let it go)
get to have such a pigs-in-a-blanket influence in deciding who America’s
candidates for the highest office in the land will be? It seems corn-flaky
to me. But then Iowa has the great distinction of leading our nation in
corn production, and
Des Moines, the state capital, the more dubious distinction of
being the home to the insurance industry, but I won’t go there
now.

I hate the
term “family values.” In fact, I despise any and all politically structured
phrases coined for the purpose of seizing the attention of the American

THE MYTH OF THE POLARIZING
HILLARY

NBC Today Show’s Ann Curry recently took a trip to the South Pole. She was
on a fact-finding mission in search of the source who started the rumor that Hillary Clinton is a polarizing figure and can never be elected president.
It took Ms. Curry days to arrive at the Pole, and, alas, after all of her
efforts, she never found the source of the Polar-izing rumor...

If
there is one thing this country has learned from nearly eight years of
governance by the Bush administration it is that the Republican Party needs
a crash
course in
How to Win Friends and Influence People. At no time in America’s history have we been so reviled by the world as we
are now. And surely, we feel no safer at this time then we did the day after
9/11...

Forty
years is a long time. That’s how long it took the Jewish people to cross the
desert, and that’s how long it’s been since I’d seen Barbara, Dee Dee, and

from my childhood in summer camp...

What’s
with America?
What the heck has happened to this country? Where did our fighting spirit
go? Americans have turned into a bunch of mealy-mouthed victims. It’s as if
we’re suffering from a collective case of battered wife syndrome. Under the
weight of the constant and severe abuse rendered upon us thanks to Old Texas
Tea-totaller himself, the President Tush, we’ve sunk into mass
depression. We’ve lost all sense of independent action, and like a woman
who undergoes years of physical and emotional abuse, we refuse to press
criminal charges against our abuser...

MCCAIN'S MUTINY

It must be difficult being John McCain. I
imagine that the retired Navy Captain wakes up every morning, grabs his cup
of mocha java, and jumps into the shower singing Anchors Aweigh while he
scrubs the barnacles off his aging skin. Hobbling to the bathroom mirror, he
wipes clean the fog, picks up his razor, gazes at his reflection and wonders
who the heck is staring him back in his face...

So who
is this guy named Obama? What do we really know about him, anyway? Oh, yeah,
he's written a book or two, but other than his complicated lineage, and his
pseudo-Bill Clinton story of hope, what's this guy accomplished that
he's running for President of the free world? I mean really...

“Fourscore
