THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING EARNEST

by Halli Casser-Jayne | Posted, December 31, 2007 12:01 p.m.

John Edwards, if nothing else, is the most earnest candidate vying for the office of President of the United States
, so it’s hard to make jokes about him, and even harder to take aim at his platform.

MRS. CLINTON AND MRS. BHUTTO
by Halli Casser-Jayne | Posted, December 28, 2007 12:01 p.m.

Islamabad, Pakistan is a long way from Iowa but in this increasingly small world it is just around the corner. So, in a sense you could say that the late Benazir Bhutto was the girl next door ... she just happened to be Pakistan’s and the Muslim world’s first woman prime minister. Similar in the way that Hillary Clinton is the girl next door – from Park Ridge, Illinois - who happens to be the first woman to be seriously running to be elected president of the United States.

ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS
by Halli Casser-Jayne | Posted, December 27, 2007 12:01 p.m.
______________________

Like their Republican counterparts, Democrats are shopping for a new presidential nominee, trying to determine who would be the best candidate for America’s top job. On January 3rd, the first election of the eliminating process takes place. In Iowa, it’s down to the wire. The candidates are giving it their all. Where do they stand on the burning issues of the day: Iraq? Education? Health Care Reform? The Future of the Planet?

DUCK, DUCK, DUCK BARACK OBAMA
by Halli Casser-Jayne | Posted, December 24, 2007 12:01 p.m.

I once had a discussion with E.J. Dionne of The Washington Post that centered on the reason Democrats have such a hard time winning elections. We were at a dinner together and duck was on the menu, but more about DUCK later..

HAPPY HOLIDAYS HILLARY

Jingle Bells … I’m in the holiday spirit and in the spirit of holiday charity I have decided to offer Hillary Clinton some sage-green mistletoe advice. I say “charity” because the advice I’m about to give Senator Clinton is free and unsolicited.

LADIES FIRST

There was a time when the office of the vice president was considered a ceremonial job, wrongly, but that’s how it was seen. John Nance Garner, FDR’s Vice President once called the position “a warm bucket of piss.”  .

THE REAL JOE BIDEN
by Halli Casser-Jayne|Posted, December 17, 2007 12:01 p.m.
______________________

Joe Biden is  intelligent, experienced, engaging and handsome (in an east coast kinda way). He’s seeking the democratic nomination for president - sorta.  Biden whose first bid for the presidency dissolved in an alleged plagiarism scandal, since proved phony, seems to be making only a half-hearted effort to achieve the nomination -- and it’s too bad.  Biden just might be the right candidate for the job.

NANCY DO-LITTLE PELOSI
by Halli Casser-Jayne|Posted, December 14, 2007 12:01 p.m.
______________________

Wouldn’t it be loverly if House Speaker Nancy "Do-little" Pelosi had a room somewhere far away from the cold, night air of Washington D.C.? With a little bit of luck, she’ll get on a plane heading west and return to California where she belongs to live happily ever after with her own handsome and very rich Professor Higgins, her husband Paul Pelosi.

BLACK LIKE SHE

There’s a reason why Oprah Winfrey is the giant she is (she eats too much, only kidding). There is almost no better marketing genius than she. Oprah Winfrey has made herself a famous and wealthy women by creating the brand she has been most successful in marketing -- herself. But apparently bored with selling “Oprah,” in the last few years Ms. Winfrey has turned her talents to building the careers of others including writers, a psychologist, Dr. Phil, a diet guru, a decorator, and lately, a doctor.

TAKE THAT OLD TIME RELIGION AND ...
by Halli Casser-Jayne|Posted, December 7, 2007 12:01 p.m.
______________________
Just like 40 years ago when America’s right wing had John Kennedy up against the religious ropes because the  guy was born a Catholic, hands rubbed together in glee these last few days waiting in lurid anticipation to learn how Republican Presidential candidate Willard Mitt Romney, who happens to have been born to a Mormon family, was going to save his candidacy from its assault from the Christian Right.

THE MOTHER OF OUR COUNTRY
by Halli Casser-Jayne|Posted, December 5, 2007 12:01 p.m.
______________________
In 1878 an amendment to the Constitution was introduced in Congress to give women the right to vote. It was defeated. It was then reintroduced in every session of Congress for the next 40 years. It finally passed the House of Representatives in 1918 where it was introduced by Jeannette Rankin of Montana, the first woman elected to Congress; it passed the Senate in 1919 and was ratified by the States the following year. Women voted for the first time in the presidential election of 1920, nearly 100 years ago.

WHY ELIZABETH EDWARDS SHOULD SUPPORT HILLARY CLINTON
by Halli Casser-Jayne|Posted, December 3, 2007 12:01 p.m.

In this era of generic reporting by the traditional news media and punditry, where journalists are long on spewing opinion and short on reporting facts, it would behoove the women of America to start reading the fine print.
