(THE BLOG) (Posted M W F at High Noon) PAST IMPERFECT
Americans like their presidents strong, serious, and nice-looking, and with a bit of the bad-boy built into them.
If it’s true that a Harvard or Yale Law School
degree is a must on the resume of a president, maybe even more
important as a qualification to elect a president is to know that
there’s a bit of the Blarney in those Americans choose to lead their
country. Americans like to vote for the boy inside the man. Are
American’s in love with Peck’s Bad Boy?
For those of you who don’t know,
Peck's Bad Boy was the fictional star of newspaper stories and books
created by
George W. Peck in the late 1800s. Hennery (or Henry) Peck was a
mischievous boy who loved to play sneaky pranks on others,
especially his father, for the sheer enjoyment of creating havoc.
The stories were a huge hit in their day, and the name Peck's Bad
Boy became a popular term for any incorrigible rule-breaker. George
Peck collected his stories into several books, the most well-known
Peck's Bad Boy and His Pa (1883).
American voters like their
presidents to have an imperfect history even when they say they
don’t. They like their presidents to have a twinkle in their eye
even when the pundits focus on questions such as does Barack Obama
have enough foreign policy experience? Or is McCain a puppet of the
Neocons? When it comes to electing presidents of the United States
naughty is in, perfect is out.
When handsome John F. Kennedy was
seeking the presidency, the man with looks that could have put his image on
the cover of a Harlequin Romance novel, America’s women fantasized
all sorts of things about the relatively young president. I doubt
many of the fantasies had to do with Kennedy sitting across the
table from the Soviet President Nikita Khrushchev. And didn’t they
all love those below the radar rumors of Kennedy’s relationship with
Hollywood bombshell Marilyn Monroe? Of course, no one really wanted
to know the truth about Kennedy’s extracurricular activities; they
just wanted to enjoy the rumors. A little bit of bad-boy enhanced
the image of the future president. Yes, American’s love their rascals.
Lyndon Baines Johnson (LBJ) inherited the presidency
following the assassination of Kennedy and presided over our
government during one of the worst times in the Twentieth Century.
He was the perfect president for the times. LBJ’s image was like
the state he hailed from, Texas-sized. America needed someone bigger
than life and for a time “raw and boisterous” Johnson endeared himself
to voters as a man who worked hard and played hard. Images of him
driving across his Texas ranch in his Texas-sized Cadillac a beer in
hand, his devoted Lady Bird sitting by his side in that ostentatious
symbol of success became the stuff of legends. Jimmy Carter the peanut farmer from Plains, Georgia shocked Americans with his 1976 Playboy Interview with writer Robert Sheer but not because he’d granted an interview to Playboy, but because of what he said in the interview.
“Because
I'm just human and I'm tempted and Christ set some almost impossible
standards for us...I've looked on a lot of
women with lust.” Jimmy Carter, by the way, is the only president to
thus far have granted an interview to Playboy despite the fact that
the shocking interview might have catapulted Carter across the
threshold to the presidency.

It's my take
on Joe Biden then and now. I still think that HRC would be BO's
best pick, but more importantly, the Democratic Party's best
pick for VP. But having covered BO now these many months, I
don't think BO has the sense of self to have a VP of HRC's
magnitude standing beside him. If I'm right, and he doesn't pick
her, his fatal flaw, his ego, will be out there for the world to
see. It will be clear that satisfying his own ego is more
important than winning for himself, his party or his country.
That's no small flaw. He used the forum as an infomercial and I understand why since BO has had so many more public forums and press than he has. But if he says, "My friends" one more time, Oh, annoying! Comparing the two...MAC is clearly the better informed on foreign policy issues. And much more self-assured when it comes to his opinions. If you could put the two together you'd have a perfect president. Alas, you cannot. Warren asks BO, just as I'm writing: "What do you think about people who don't like my asking these questions?" What could Obama say other than it is an important forum. Here's what I think: If such a forum is necessary, then it should be hosted not by only a Christian leader, but should be hosted by a Rabbi, a Priest, etc. Christianity is not this Nation's religion. As to the issues discussed, BO handled them well. He was asked which Supreme Court Justice he would not have appointed, and BO named Clarence Thomas, and basically called the guy dumb...ten points BO. He also handled the abortion question well, and the obvious questions he knew that he would be asked on stem cell, the marriage amendment..., well, you know the drill. Warren is a mensch, and so is BO. They played well together. Let's see how MAC does. Posted by: Halli Casser-Jayne | August 16, 2008 8:34 PM | comment why does bo have to name his vp now? Watching the poll numbers is disheartening if you're a Democrat. Now BO's must have Colorado, what was to be an easy win for him, isn't. Polls are showing MAC ahead there. BO needs the BIGGEST pounce out of the convention. He'll have all that attention, the acceptance speech in the bowl...he should wait, announce his VP there, and make it HRC. That would end the contest, shy some horror about BO coming out in Oct. There is no horror to come out on HRC...they're all out. Any other VP he picks, he'll never know what evil lurks no matter the vetting. Seems, under the circumstances, he's a risk taker...no, a true gambler...if at this point he passes HRC up for an unknown. They are both committed to winning back the White House and to to ensuring that the voices of all 35 million people who participated in this historic primary election are respected and heard in Denver. To honor and celebrate these voices and votes, both Senator Obama's and Senator Clinton's names will be placed in nomination. “I am convinced that honoring Senator Clinton's historic campaign in this way will help us celebrate this defining moment in our history and bring the party together in a strong united fashion,” said Senator Barack Obama. Senator Obama’s campaign encouraged Senator Clinton's name to be placed in nomination as a show of unity and in recognition of the historic race she ran and the fact that she was the first woman to compete in all of our nation’s primary contests. “With every voice heard and the Party strongly united, we will elect Senator Obama President of the United States and put our nation on the path to peace and prosperity once again,” said Senator Hillary Clinton. Later, in September, when BO repositions himself on the subject, there will be a vote, and there will be off-shore drilling. Nancy Pelosi is disliked by Dems and Reps. alike, which is one of the reasons Congress' polls remain dismal. She needs to go. BO is right about the need for political change. He, however, is NOT a change candidate. His leader, Nancy Pelosi, is who BO is: a partisan candidate who could care less about America and Americans -- whose patriotism is there only in the sense of what it can do for him and his gaining power.
